I think thats it.
Sounded awsome. MJK was far more animated & vocal than in Glasgow and Barcelona. Even walked up to the edge of the stage to the crowd at the beginning of the show. Told the same Belgium crack. Justin - on fire - playing to the home crowd. Crowd went nuts. (good to see lots of Aussies too!)

I was most satisfied, Hammersmith Apollo is ingenious with it's stalls floor rising towards the back. We got there at 7pm I think, I really wanted to get up front so I could see everything, being 5 foot 2". The clever British people were seated on the floor, so I thought 'Well done! We don't have to stand for an hour & a half waiting.' It didn't last, someone stood up at the front- probably to go off & get a drink, then suddenly it was all rush to stand up & squish. We remained sitting until 8:30pm I think, everyone was standing around us by then.

Yeah, pretty packed, but not so much that I couldn't breathe. It wasn't too hot where we were either. Thanks for all the advice not to take bags & that in.

So the curtain went up & I went into hypo mode to Stinkfist- charge!!! I remembered why my heart is so at peace at rock concerts, nothing like having a sound vibrate & shiver tingly all through your body, synergising with your heart & quivering your mind to the tips of your smile. I love it LOUD!!!

Maynard was shirtless & took off his cowboy hat to reveal a mohawk. I thought he looked like a Rooster & kind of danced like one- well, maybe a Rooster trying to be Maynard.

Danny, total legend- I was hypnotised by his percussion power. His whirling of drumsticks should have been a blur to my eyes but I could see it all clearly. True admiration for his skill in pulverising.

Adam fully amazed me with his riffs, it's so awesome to see this music being created right there in front of me. Heheh, for a moment there I thought he had become a Grip Reaper with his maniacal grin & looming look through his shroud of dark hair. & Justin, just felt like home to me- how I miss my long-haired westy boys & rock music! That smile that kept gleaming through his hair as he grooved along...

The vibe was definitely, these fullas LOVE their music & have complete faith in it, as do we all. I so love going to a real live concert where it's not just the band doing exactly what is on the CD. True musicians taking us on a journey.

Ahhh, there was a part towards the end where I had my eyes closed & it felt like the music was humming & buzzing right inside my head- like suddenly I had accessed that place in space where the physical becomes completely penetrated by the spirit & returns to the infinite nothingness while we drop the I & become absorbed by the all.

So we shall see them again in November? I thought they were to play Aotearoa by then?

Thank you guys so much. I didn't think I would get to see them- we missed out on tickets, but thanks to Simon we got some in the end. Woohoo!

Die humanoide Riesenschlange vor der ausverkauften Philipshalle schimmert in den unterschiedlichsten Farben: Headbanger und Computernerds, Indiekids und Dunkeljünger, Althippies und sonnenbankgebräunte BWLer – alle sind dem Ruf der Prog-Metaller Tool gefolgt. Schließlich überbrückten die meisten von ihnen wenigstens vier Jahre Wartezeit bis zur neuerlichen Chance, die Kalifornier in concert zu bestaunen.

So schwer allerdings der Eindruck der Pluralität im ersten Moment wiegt, so leicht lässt sich die Fan-Gemeinde in zwei mehr oder minder feste Lager dividieren. Da wäre zum einen die Fraktion der treuen Wegbegleiter aus den mittleren Neunzigern, als die Kalifornier mit "Undertow" und vor allem "Ænima" Meilensteine alternativer Gitarrenmusik setzten. Zum anderem erweitern Anhänger der "Lateralus"-Ära schon seit Jahren den toolschen Genpool. Im Unterschied zu Erstgenannten liegt die Präferenz hier auf dem vertrackteren, künstlich-kunstvolleren und noch opulenteren Oeuvre dieser Band.
Bleibt die Frage, ob es Maynard und Kollegen gelingt, beide Seiten zufriedenzustellen. Die Antwort fällt an diesem Donnerstagabend aus vielerlei Gründen indifferent aus. Doch in medias res und von vorne: Frontmann Keenans nackter Oberkörper, gewappnet mit Cowboy-Hut und Talkbox, platziert sich zunächst vor der im Tool-Kontext bekannten Videoinstallation. Anfänglichen Soundproblemen zum Trotz feuert er alsbald die fiebrigen Verse aus "Rosetta Stoned" ins Publikum. Zwischen weiteren Sprengseln des jüngsten Streiches "10,000 Days" ("Jambi", "Right In Two", "Vicarious") erfolgt dann eine Art 90-Minuten-Best Of.

Der "Ænima"-Opener "Stinkfist" und die Metaldisco-Nummer "Sober" bedienen die angestammte Hörerschaft, "Schism" und "Lateralus" neuere Klientel. Keenan kokettiert des Öfteren mit schwuler Ästhetik, vollführt an einer imaginären Striptease-Stange Kopulationsbewegungen. Ansonsten allerdings marginalisiert das visuelle Rückgrat aus MTV-Clips und Lavalampenemulsionen die stets stillstehenden Akteure. Einige arhythmisch schwingende Mädchenkörper weiter hinten ausgenommen (LSD, anyone?), verharrt man vor der Bühne meist ebenfalls reglos bis andächtig.

Den Schlusspunkt unter eine durchgestylte, routinierte Rockshow setzt schließlich "Ænema". Mitschuld an der insgesamt etwas unterkühlten Konzertdarbietung trägt sicher die weitläufige Venue. Als wirklich kritigwürdig offenbart sich im Nachhinein aber eine überwiegend auf Hits fokussierte Setlist, die atmosphärischen Schwerpunkten keinen Raum ließ. Das Gros der Anwesenden stört das jedoch wenig, sondern stürzt nach dem Finale an den Merchandise-Stand, um hochpreisige T-Shirts und/oder ein original Tool-Höschen zu erwerben. Ich für meinen Teil fahre kurz darauf mit nicht ganz erfüllten Erwartungen wieder heimwärts.
