While puttering around in our garden we discovered some things we didn't like on Number Seven and since we have sold out the initial run, we are doing a slight remix.

The theory was that we would use more analogue outboard gear to do a remaster since we had to repress the album. A test with some rented gear had shown that we could improve the sound. This lead to our pricing some mixing boards, which proved to be prohibitively expensive.

After doing some research Gabe discovered some tricks regarding mixing in pro-tools and levels which we believe will bring the album to finally sounding the way we want it to sound.

It is admittedly rare to reissue an album mere months after its initial release, but we didn't want to reprint copies that we felt could be improved upon.

So, all this has pushed 7˝ back.

It is just possible that we keep pushing 7˝ back because songs keep getting dropped from it and require new songs...

Currently, the new album will hopefully clock in somewhere around 50 minutes and contain either 3 or 4 songs:
Star Of Light
Out Of The Angry Planet
Et Cetera
(and possibly Have No Fear, although that may be left off as well. It was an outtake from Number Seven)

We have dropped Tempest Of Mutiny and Strange Cloud because they have appeared on other albums (Tempest on Pirate Tales and Strange Cloud on recent Musea Dante's Purgatory set). The thinking is that soon we're going to have a compilation/odds&sods set where those songs will live alongside some outtakes and alternate versions/live versions plus the ubiquitous key album tracks.

So, as for 7˝, I am hopeful that it can be done by april/may at this point. Number Seven Redux will hopefully be out in 4 weeks. There will be a link where you can download a .wav file for free if you already bought the other version. I might also get a bunch pressed without booklet to exchange for folks original versions if they so desire.

Rush Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction

The Canadian Songwriting Hall of Fame honours and preserves Canada’s rich songwriting heritage by honouring artists that have written songs that have entered into popular culture and been sustained for a significant period of time.

RUSH will be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame on Sunday, March 28th, 2010 at the gala held at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.

The 5 RUSH songs entering the Hall of Fame are Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, Limelight, Closer to the Heart and Subdivisions. Which means Rush and their songs are joining the likes of Joni Mitchell “Big Yellow Taxi”, Burton Cummings/Randy Bachman “American Woman”, Leonard Cohen “Hallelujah”. As part of the induction, bands influenced by Rush will be performing renditions of their hits. Alexisonfire will be taking on “Tom Sawyer”, Primus frontman Les Claypool and his band will be playing “The Spirit Of Radio”, and Jacob Moon will be performing “Subdivisions”.

Needless to say, it’s a great honour for the band and all 3 members of Rush will be in attendance on this special night.

Hey Everyone,

Sorry there hasn't been much news. However, there are a few things on
the horizon. Number one is that tomorrow I go and listen to the full
"final mix" of Snowtorch for the first time. What this actually means
is that Gabe has been slaving over it for the past month in his secret
laboratory and tomorrow is the day I am to be let in. Of course, the
way we work is that I give him all sorts of notes and cautions and ideas
and stipulations about the mix. Then, he goes in and ignores half of my
daft ideas and creates art and beauty. Or maybe it's somewhere in the
middle...

However, I wouldn't put off Christmas prezzies in waiting for Snowtorch
because hell might freeze over before then (oh, would we use a snowtorch
to melt the ice in hell, or to freeze the fires???).

So, tomorrow I will begin the lovely process known as "dithering". I
will listen, most likely in shock because I've lived with the rough
mixes for weeks now. So, hearing the final mixes will take a little
getting used to. I might have a few impressions, then once we iron out
the final details it's off to "mastering". That's the part where
someone takes the mix that you've slaved over and makes it sound louder
and bassier and generally different... Oh, the agony.

However, the artwork is at the printers as we speak. We will be
releasing a vinyl edition. Regular grade LP in gatefold cover (with a
different sleeve from the CD). The CD will come housed in a japanese
"mini LP" style sleeve with a lyric insert because the lyrics wouldn't
fit inside the gatefold. All this artwork was designed by Molly Ruttan
and provides a slight key to the themes of Snowtorch. The artwork,
since we are dealing off the "jewel case" grid, will be taking a little
longer than we anticipated. So, sadly we have missed the Xmas deadline.

A few other notes:
PERFORMANCE:

Phideaux, the band, is performing at RosFest in May 2011. We are also
trying to book some shows in UK for June/July of 2011. It would be
ideal if we could get some shows in Europe as well.

REMASTERS/COMPILATIONS
Doomsday Afternoon and Fiendish are now out of Print. The fact that
Doomsday has sold out its run has left us with a few options. As a
result we are going to be remastering/remixing the album and putting out
a new edition, now to be housed in a japanese "mini LP" style sleeve
with the same booklet as before accompanying. The music will hopefully
have some slight improvements in sound quality.

Fiendish (because of some elements involved in the original mix which
would prove tricky to re-create) will be moving out to pasture for at
least 2011.

After we remaster Doomsday, we plan to release that album on vinyl as
well. It will be ganged up in a package with The Great Leap (since they
are both 60ish minutes) - each album sharing a single platter for "side
three". The package will be 3 LP set housed in two gatefold covers with
a shared lyric and art booklet. This edition will only be sold as a set
and (as with all our vinyl editions) is no doubt a limited edition.

Also on the horizon, we plan to release a compilation album entitled "A
Brief History Of Stuff And Nonsense". This will be a 2 CD, 3 LP set.
The first disc gathers together approximately 67 minutes of previously
released songs (although many of these versions will be somewhat
different from their album counterparts). The second disc trawls
through the ancient archives of Phideaux to pull out some unreleased and
unusual ditties. Some outtakes from Ghost Story and Great Leap will
feature as well as an early demo album of Phideaux Xavier's previous
band The SunMachine. I am looking forward to sharing these flawed gems
with the world. For so long they have been part of my private
collection of music and now the time has come to show off some of our
warts...

7½ and MOGON
Probably just after Doomsday remix and before Brief History, we will
release our "on again/off again" album called "7½". This consists of
music that we wrote and recorded during and after Number Seven and
amidst the creation of Snowtorch. "7½" will present the slightly more
upbeat "rock music" of Phideaux (as contrasted with the more obscure
developments of Number Seven and Snowtorch). I think some might find it
a fun listen. The songs on 7½ (as of this writing...) are Tempest Of
Mutiny, Strange Cloud, Et Cetera, Out Of The Angry Planet, Have No Fear,
Love Of A Millions Doves and The Odyssey. (the last two songs are new
arrangements of songs from Phideaux's demo album Friction).

Mogon is another story... This is a more minimal side project between
Phideaux Xavier and various other folks. Johnny Unicorn and Rich
Hutchins play on much of it and Molly Ruttan steps out from her world of
art and painting to bang the drums on almost half the album. Mogon's
first album will be entitled "These Are Our True Faces" and represents a
bit simpler approach than proper "Phideaux" albums of late. I wouldn't
expect Mogon until at least mid summer.

I am hopeful that we will come to RosFest armed with Snowtorch, the new
edition of Doomsday Afternoon, 7½ and A Brief History Of Stuff And
Nonsense. Wish me luck and send a message. We greatly appreciate the
communications. Also, if you have any ideas for us, or want to help
with spreading the word of Phideaux, please let me know.

progressive/art rock half the fun is the twiddly bits and instrumental
prowess!

Speaking of which, I just got the final mix disc from producer Gabriel
Moffat. I have to listen to the premastered version to make sure there
are no last minute changes... I'm excited because the artwork is all
printed and we're ready to get the album done. The release date is
spring equinox, when all the snow will hopefully be gone from North
America (well, not the arctic circle part...)

To bring folks up to date on the news. Phideaux will release a new album
called "Snowtorch" via there own publishing entity Bloodfish Media. You
can expect to find the album through your normal distribution channels
on Spring Equinox 3/20/11.

"Snowtorch" is a song cycle celebrating stars, space dust and DNA. The
album is broken into three tracks as follows:
1) Snowtorch Part One [Star Of Light/Retrograde/Fox On The Rocks/Celestine]
2) Helix
3) Snowtorch Part Two [Blowtorch Snowjob/Fox Rock 2/Coronal Mass Ejection]

There will be a vinyl and CD run of the album, with both editions housed
in gatefold cardboard sleeves. We will upload some samples soon, so stay
tuned and we thank you for your support.

Phideaux zamieścił własnie cały nowy album na swojej grupie dyskusyjnej w formacie wav. Niestety nie mogę na razie zmieścić do niego linków (powiedział że leakai można robić dopiero po 20 marca), ale zaraz będe słuchał Snowtorcha. Pierwsze recenzje w sieci móią o powrocie w stronę bardziej symfonicznego grania, bliżej płycie do DA niż N7.

Koncept dotyczy tego jak kosmos związany jest z rozprzestrzenianiem się zyćia, okładka bardzo wymowana

Mogę ci rzucić na privie linki, ale nie rozdawaj nikomu, ani nie taguj Smile

Płyta jest piękna, co było bardzo do przewidzenia.

Jeśli chodzi o tematykę, z tego co udało mi się wywynioskować, jest wyznaniem umierajacego człowieka, który doznaje olśnienia co do tego jak życie uczestniczy w wielkim kosmicznym cyklu. W skrócie " jestem takim małym paroszkiem w kosmosie, jak dobrze że mogłem sobie żyć". Niby banał, ale bardzo poruszający, zwłaszcza początek płyty i środkowa piosenka-spoiler: Helix.

Bardzo dużo syntezatorów, wogóle płyta skonstruwana na bardzo mroczną i efektowną, trochę transowe te klawisze, komosy lekkie. Pojawia się też przerobiony motyw z ostatniej płyty w pewnym momencie.

Genberalnie płyta łatwiejsza w odbiorze od N7, brak trochę tych jazzowych rytmów, to bardziej coś pomiędzy chupacabras a DA, z gitarami bardziej jako dodatkiem do klawiszy.

Spokojnie 10/10 jak to z Phideaux.
Warto było tyle czekać.
